Fynndlit - Fynndlit VI (Disc XV)

So I'm building sequencers in class right now, and this was the first time i really sat down to record a song after having a mostly complete version. Totally just jammed on some Berlin School (Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Bernd Kistenmacher) for like 45 minutes and started falling asleep while I was playing. Feels good to have this genre in my pocket.

Vinyl Williams & Fynndlit - Space Cruisin' No. 1

Thats right. Lionel and I teamed up to make songs to listen to while cruisin' in space. And yes, that says "No. 1." And yes, that does insinuate that we will be releasing quite a few more. So your daily commute to outer space will never be without a worthy soundtrack. STARZ

NEW MOVIE

I made this ridiculous movie with Katie today, (oct 10th, 2011) as the video counterpoint to my new hit single "6.35" from my new album Fynndlit VI (Disc XIV)! I suggest making this as big and as loud as possible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwfLngTAsgA

-James

Dan Bruinooge & James Lake - #5

New jams with dan. We both did stuff with our computers, me mostly using synthesizers built in reaktor, while dan used all sorts of stuff in Reason. i sorta dance to this one.

Fynndlit - Fynndlit VI (Disc XIII)

Music for Feedback and Motion - Fynndlit & Shrub

WATT

The Fynndlit Big Band - Shadow Play

This was a jam I did with Ian on aux percussion and signal processing, alex rowe on his new giant keyboard, and christian noakes on organ with a tremolo and a phaser pedal while I did stuff on my analog synth. This one turned out very well, I hope you enjoy it.

The Fynndlit Big Band - Journey to the Moon in Super Submarines

This was an old jam that got stuck on my old 24 track recorder thing for quite a while. This one turned out to be really good actually, and long. Ian on guitar, Shrub on bass, me on drums, jack on aux drums and effects.

-James

Fynndlit - Megaliths

These two tracks were recorded outside with me and alex metson on synthesizers and ian on his guitar with signal processing. I love how these turned out.

-James

Fynndlit - Fynndlit XV & XVI

Both these songs were made while I was staying in Big Bear with my family. My dad plays guitar on the second track!

Deep Time Gazers - Density Friendzy

This song was made from editing down hours of improvisations done while visiting my brother and his friends in berkeley on July 7th and July 8th while me and aaron were on a road trip. It has lots of synthesizers and grooves.

The Fynndlit Big Band - Hazel Ogham

This is a jam from a while ago (June 8th, 2011) but didn't get around to posting it until now because we didn't have this cool name!

-James

The Fynndlit Big Band - Driving Music

Need something to drive to? This might be it. We were really inspired by Kraftwerk on this one. Ian on guitar, Jack on bass, me on synth, and we used the drum beats on my organ through a delay for the drums.

Fynndlit & Shrub - Phases

This is an album I made with one of my best friends, ALEX BRAVO, whose name is also Shrub. Lots of reverb in this one.

-James

The Fynndlit Big Band - Miranda's Solar Tide

This jam included Aaron's old roommate from last year at Cal Poly Pomona. He's a great drummer so I got to play synth instead. I really really like this one.

James Lake - Analog Synth
Michael Caraglio - Drums

Fynndlit - Fynndlit XIII

This was all done on my MG 1 again, and this recording setup was strange. I was using my computer and my 24 track for other things (trying to get other jams mastered) so instead, I took this old cassette recorder and took the headphones out of my mixer and split that into stereo RCA and recorded live right onto a cassette and then ripped that digitally. Here you go.

Something Universal - Positron Emission

I recorded these songs on the first and second day that Jack was back from school for summer. It also includes Shrub on the 3rd track, and Aaron on the 5th. Lots of reverb in this one.

-James

Fynndlit - Fynndlit XI & XII

These two songs are both sort of exploiting malfunctioning audio equipment. In XI, my tape player is so bad that it pretty much does what it wants. This is a more lo-fi robert fripp or brian eno like analog tape looper. XII uses skipping CD players as the basis of it, while I play field recordings I made in Big Bear, CA that I sent through filters I built in my computer. This one turned out especially well.

THE RAPTOR OF THE RAPTURE

After school got out on May 20th, I flew up to Berkeley for my brothers graduation ceremony and hung out with his friends and we recorded all these jams on the night of May 20th to the morning of May 21st which Harold Camping said was the Rapture. The personalities involved include Nick Lake, Sam Gerhard, Patrick Xu, Patrick Krier and myself.

Fynndlit - Fynndlit VI (Disc XII)

The first song is kinda my abstract sonic interpretation of a sprinker. Both of these have crazy overtone work, the second song using up to the 27th partial. These would be tough to explain maybe I'll do it later.

Fynndlit - Fynndlit X

woo! I only used my analog synth for this one. Guess what genre of music inspired me to do this one...

Fynndlit - Fynndlit VI (Disc XI)

This one is all pretty much processed glitches and there is no legitimate sound generator here, and I purposely made the synth I was playing as confusing and unlabeled as possible so I would have no idea what I'm doing. I actually recorded this as I was building the synth, so it also shows the sound process I experienced. LONG LIVE ANG.

Fynndlit - Fynndlit VI (Disc X) Mothersday Special!

Happy Mothersday Mom! Love you! I made this crazy song, and I'm not sure if you'll like it, but here you go. It's kind of long, but it does have a form I swear. Hope you can relax all day and have dad do everything for you. I'll be home soon so don't worry! Thanks for all your support and letting me to go this awesome school! My life is going just the way I want, and it wouldn't be without you. =)

Love, James

1. 6.25 (Mothersday Mixzz) [40:34]

(let me know if you can't figure out how to download this =)

ps, this was edited together from 3 or 4 different improvisations, all of which were made in somewhat interesting situations. One of the sections I improvised and recorded while I was napping to it, one section I was sitting out side doing some experiment that worked out perfectly to make the rhythms, one section I had access to this cool keyboard I could plug into my computer, so I retuned it weirdly and played a bunch of random weird tuned chords, then I added some after effects like reverbs and delays and arranged them to make it a cohesive song. Yeah, so thats kind of how I put it together!

Fynndlit & Vinyl Williams - Live in A402

NIghtmusic IV - Jam at Tatum

I did an improv show at Tatum lounge at Calarts on April 19th, 2011 with my friends Aidan Reynolds and Dan Bruinooge. Me and Aidan were doing crazy feedback manipulations, and Dan had a cymbal with a contact mic, some effects and a bass drum. The second song is my teacher Mike Fink on guitar and electronics and a student named Jim Murphy doing stuff with his computer and other electronics. The third is all of us playing together with the addition of guitarist Tony DiGennaro and cellist Derek Stein.

Fynndlit - Fynndlit VI (Disc IX)

Ok, so I'm getting to a point where it would be really hard to explain everything I did in each one of these songs, but basically, I had a screen I could "draw" on (fairly limited drawing) and it would scan the drawing for the pitch material, and I had a rate knob telling it how fast to read it. I then attached LFOs with random oscillators to all the levels of the rate knobs, levels of different wave forms, etc... I then kind of tricked the synth to play in weird logarithmic based scales by using this converter that switches the logarithmic frequency scale in Hz to the linear based midi 'Pitch' scale, and I used this even though everything was done in midi Pitch so it interpreted the midi pitch scale as a logarithmic scale, and converted it to a linear one, and the end result is a knob that changes the whole synth into a weird tuning system. none of this really matters it just sounds super crazy.

Fynndlit - Fynndlit VI (Disc VIII)

OK so there are two completely separate but identical feedback loops in the left and right ears but sometimes it seems like they are following some interlocking pattern, but technically, that shouldn't happen. I DONNO it's just the wonderful world of feedback.

p.s. It's really crazy for the first few seconds after you stop listening to this song. It makes everything sound weird and electronic.

The first song is a jam i did with alex, renz and ian. Renz on Bass, Ian on feedback and signal processing, alex on organ, and me adding feedback to the bass. The second is a jam with alex and Christian Noakes. Alex played organ, i played acoustic guitar, and christian played melodica, then we recorded another percussion track on top.

Fynndlit - Zelda Jam

Zelda Jam: exactly what it sounds like. Aaron played zelda for two hours, and I took the RCA out from the game console and plugged it into my input mixer and made ambient music with only the sounds of the game. This was really fun, it gives me this super weird cotton candy block nostalgia.

The Universal Carpeter Band - Trios

So, The Universal Carpeter Band is the name I'm giving to all the jams that were stuck on my old 24 track from late 2009/2010 because now its hard to tell exactly who is on what. But it includes the stylings of Jack Selberg, Aaron Cote, Alex Rowe, Ian Scheiner, Nick Lake, and myself. This album Trios consists of two jams, the first with Alex and Ian, the second with Nick and Ian, both seem super communicational and there was a lot of chemistry between us for these.

-James

Fynndlit - Fynndlit VIII

This was some music that i made with alex and renz where we took a short tape loop and recorded percussion on it, and then recorded that onto a track on my computer, then erased the tape and did it again with different percussion, and repeated this a bunch of times. This way the down beats would technically be the same and they would be repeating at the same time in order to create these super crazy awkward groovin' rhythms! the last song is an improv that was constantly recorded onto a loop, which goes for the second half of the song.

Fynndlit - Computer Music

Hey, so I just got this program Reaktor 5 for a class for school and these are the first things I did on it. The first one is 6 sine waves tuned to the frequencies in the title, with some delay. The last song is in 3 parts, and is pure feedback from crazy accident, it worked out perfectly.

Fynndlit IV - Tribunal/Pro(s)ceedings/Verdict

This jam is also with Alex and Renz and for this one, we wanted to explore the act of physically abusing the medium in which our music was recorded. We first recorded some percussion improv on to my reel-to-reel, and then we slowed it down and recorded that as Tribunal/Pro(s)ceedings. We then took a 4 foot snip out of that tape to make a loop. As the loop played, we cut the tape with a knife, burned it with a lighter, and brought a magnet close. We also used some live percussion during this also. We recorded this as Pro(s)ceedings/Verdict. This is how it turned out!

Fynndlit III

This is a fat drone that was recorded on thead's 4-track tape recorder with keys on the organ and my synth taped down while we turned nobs extremely slowly. The actual jam was only 40 minutes, but we slowed the tape down to lower the pitch and to extend it. 12/something/10
